Why I trust data, not dogma: the engineer’s case against low-tox perfectionism

If you’ve spent any time in low-tox spaces online, you’ve met two kinds of advice. One tells you everything in your home is dangerous and you should be afraid. The other hands you a list of approved products and expects you to take it on faith. Neither is how I was trained to make decisions.

I spent a decade as an electrical engineer before an autoimmune diagnosis sent me digging through the products under my own sink. What I found wasn’t a reason to panic — it was a reason to evaluate. “Data over dogma” is the shorthand I use for that difference: instead of reacting to fear or deferring to an authority, you look at the evidence, weigh the trade-offs, and make a call you can actually defend. Here’s what that looks like in practice, and why perfectionism is the thing quietly holding most people back.

What does “data over dogma” actually mean?

Dogma is a belief you’re expected to accept without checking. In the low-tox world it shows up in two costumes. The first is fear: everything is dangerous, throw it all out. The second is authority: this influencer swears by this brand, so it must be fine. Both ask you to skip the part where you actually look at the evidence.

Data is the opposite habit. It means asking what’s actually in a product, what the research actually says about those ingredients, and how much of it you’re actually exposed to. It’s slower than fear and less comfortable than faith, because it sometimes leaves you with “it depends” instead of a clean yes or no. But “it depends” is usually the honest answer, and an honest answer you understand beats a confident one you’re just repeating.

This isn’t about having a science degree. It’s about a posture: show me, don’t tell me. You can learn the handful of moves it takes to evaluate a product yourself, and once you have them, you stop needing anyone — including me — to hand you the answer.

Why doesn’t “everything is toxic” hold up?

Because the word is doing more emotional work than scientific work. Almost everything is made of chemicals — water is a chemical, so is the oxygen you’re breathing. The meaningful question is never “does this contain a chemical?” It’s “at the amount I’m exposed to, does the evidence suggest this is a problem for my family?”

That distinction — presence versus exposure — is the single most important idea in evaluating any product, and it’s the one fear-based messaging skips entirely. An ingredient that’s concerning at industrial concentrations may be irrelevant at the trace amount in a finished product. Something can be entirely “plant-derived” and still irritate your skin. The label tells you what’s there; it doesn’t tell you whether the dose matters, and the dose is usually what matters most.

This is also why “everything is dangerous” quietly backfires. If every product is a five-alarm fire, you have no way to tell the genuine concern from the marketing scare. Treating everything as equally urgent isn’t caution — it’s just noise that drowns out the things actually worth your attention.

What does an engineer do instead?

You replace the verdict with a process. Engineering doesn’t run on certainty; it runs on the best available evidence, weighed against constraints, with the trade-offs written down. Weigh the source of a claim. Not all evidence is equal. A peer-reviewed study outranks a regulatory position, which outranks a manufacturer’s own disclosure, which outranks an advocacy group’s rating, which outranks an influencer’s vibe. When two sources disagree, the stronger one wins — and if even the strong sources are split, that tells you the honest answer is “not settled yet.”

Read the first few ingredients, not the front of the box. “Gentle,” “pure,” and “free-from” are marketing, not data. The ingredient list is the data. The first five or so ingredients make up the bulk of most products.

Accept the trade-off out loud. There is no product with zero downsides. The plant-based option might cost more. The fragrance-free one might not smell like anything. Naming what you’re giving up is how you make a choice you won’t second-guess at midnight.

Isn’t perfectionism just being careful?

It feels like caution, but it usually functions as paralysis. Low-tox perfectionism is the belief that there’s one truly “safe” product out there and your job is to find it before you’re allowed to buy anything. That belief has three costs.

It’s expensive. The “safest”-marketed option is often just the priciest one, and price is not evidence. It’s exhausting — there’s always one more ingredient to worry about, so you never actually finish. And it doesn’t even deliver what it promises, because a product chosen out of fear and a product chosen from evidence can be the exact same bottle; only your stress level is different.

Perfectionism also has a way of making people give up entirely. When the standard is “everything must be flawless,” the first time you can’t meet it — the day you grab whatever’s on the shelf because your kid is melting down — feels like failure, and failure makes people quit. A standard you can actually keep beats an ideal you abandon by Thursday.

The alternative is progress over perfection: make the better-informed choice you can make today, with the time and budget you actually have, and upgrade it next time. That’s not a compromise on rigor. It’s what rigor looks like when it has to live in a real house with real constraints.

How do I start evaluating instead of fearing?

Pick one product you use every day and run it through the process once. Read the first few ingredients. Look up the one or two that concern you in a credible source rather than the first scary headline. Decide whether, at the amount you’re exposed to, it’s worth swapping — and if you swap, name what you’re trading off.

That’s it. You don’t have to audit your whole house this weekend; that’s just perfectionism wearing a productive disguise. One product, evaluated properly, teaches you more than a hundred thrown out in a panic. Do it a few times and the moves become automatic. Then say so, out loud, and decide for your own context. When credible sources genuinely disagree, that’s real information, not a gap to paper over with a confident-sounding verdict. Look at what the strongest evidence currently suggests, weigh how much you’re actually exposed to, consider your family’s specific situation, and make a call you can revisit if the evidence changes. “Here’s what I do and why, but your context may differ” is an honest place to land.
